The Bridesburg Riverfront Park - a 10-acre brownfield waterfront site that was home to a concrete factory - will be uniquely positioned place at the intersection of Orthodox St. and Delaware Avenue to provide its neighborhood with a new window to the Delaware River. The park’s three pavilions are designed to become iconic markers of its place.
PLACEMENT
The pavilions are located on the site to provide a frame for the nearby majestic Betsy Ross Bridge. The pavilions also take inspiration from the bridge’s iconic truss structure and signature blue color. As the first automotive bridge to be named after a woman in the United States, this structure is of significant pride to the Bridesburg community.
The combination of the three pavilions work together to provide a buffer or transect between the existing industry and recreational activity while providing an ecological zone between the Delaware River to mitigate rising floodplain levels.
Arriving from the northwest direction, visitors are welcomed into the park by three corresponding pavilions. Each pavilion is sited in a dedicated activity zone. Together the pavilions provide a seamless and continuous flow throughout the experience of the park.
COMPONENTS
Each pavilion is constructed with a similar kit of parts – a steel truss structure with decking clad in stainless steel perforated panels. While the painted blue truss reflects the site’s context and history, the stainless-steel panels represent a modern intervention. Together the elements come together to create an orchestrated a composition with its context.
Each pavilion’s distinguishable form is created by two triangle shapes that bend into each other in an origami fashion. This dynamic form is shaped from standard 3’x6’ stainless steel perforated panels supported by sub-frame attached to the main truss structure.
The Restroom Pavilion finds inspiration in its waterfront site along the Delaware River. Major arteries, roads, and water are each represented through varying depths of engraving and patterning within the concrete form work, providing visual interest and texture to the highly durable pavilion.
